At the fifth WEIG-KartonForum experts discussed the requirements for a possible German ordinance on mineral oil on the 13th of February 2014. Within this event WEIG presented the latest status of the cartonboard UNIFOOD, which is a recycled carton board with a functional barrier against mineral oil migration.
UNIFOOD is already available and produced regularly. The barrier cartonboard is being tested and improved in several costumer projects. In Addition UNIFOOD complements the product portfolio ahead of the potential ordinance on mineral oil. Dr. Hans-Günter Ludwig, Head of Development at WEIG-Karton, has detailed the advantages of the new cartonboard. UNIFOOD has a functional barrier against the so-called mineral oil migration. This barrier protects foodstuffs from direct and indirect influences. As with all WEIG cartonboard qualities UNIFOOD meets all requirements for good printability and further processing. As a recycled cartonboard UNIFOOD supports the requirements of sustainable packaging.
150 participants from over eight countries joined the WEIG-KartonForum, as in previous years the event was a huge success. All various aspects of the ordinance were presented, analyzed and discussed by five renowned speakers.
Dr. Reinhardt Thiel, Managing Director Environment and Technology of the German Pulp and Paper Association, illustrated the view of the paper industry and stated his assessment of content and time aspects regarding a possible ordinance on mineral oil.
Dr. Sieglinde Stähle, Scientific Manager of the German Federation for Food Law and Food Science, presented the view of the food industry and highlighted the expected and recommended measures.
The perspective of the Saxon State Agency for Research was represented by Rüdiger Helling. He exemplified the official monitoring of mineral oil migration and named his expectation concerning the mineral oil ordinance.
Christian Schiffers, Managing Director of the Association of the German Folding Carton Industry, clarified the consequences of a mineral oil ordinance for the packaging manufactures.
In conclusion Dr. Hans-Günter Ludwig presented the functionality and availability of the WEIG barrier cartonboard UNIFOOD. This was shown as a solution to protect the foodstuffs from the so-called mineral oil migration.
The WEIG-KartonForum offers a perfect opportunity for producers and converters of the cartonboard and consumer good’s industry to have a detailed and open exchange of views. On the basis of the presentations discussion between speakers and participants clarified the challenges of the ordinance and the consequences for the industry.
