The focus at AR Packaging to develop sustainable packaging solutions is once again confirmed by winning the German Packaging Award in the sustainability category. A clever construction for a complex medical-technical application reduces the use of plastics and simplifies disposal after use.
The German Packaging Award is an international packaging competition, aiming to award and promote future-oriented solutions and developments for packaging. This year the winners from Germany, Austria, Great Britain and Switzerland were chosen in 10 categories. The more sustainable packaging solution for the diagnosis of blood parameter use has been developed and produced by the AR Packaging plant in Graz, Austria.
"With sustainability as a top of priorities for most customers, AR Packaging is perfectly positioned to be the partner of choice", says Ralf Mack, Group Innovation Director at AR Packaging. "Our unique range of different packaging solutions meets the environmental requirements of today and tomorrow, while our well proven innovative capabilities ensure that product safety and pack functionalities are optimised, also for the more complex products."
The biggest challenge for the design team of the awarded packaging solution was the complex use of the medical product and associated special requirements for the packaging. Conventional product solutions use plastic containers to operate diagnostic devices. The interior of the new smart cartonboard packaging divides the box into segments, supporting and mechanically stabilising the pouches for reagents and waste liquids and allowing to adapt their volume over time. The use of cartonboard thus makes it easier and more sustainable to dispose of the hazardous medical waste.
AR Packaging in Graz is one of the largest packaging printing plants in Europe with a unique combination of technical skills. Production capabilities span from sheet-fed offset to web-fed rotogravure printing and a number of unique combination possibilities with hot foil stamping, embossing, debossing and gluing. Additionally the company offers a complex technical process only experts can provide; the inhouse production of printing and embossing cylinders.
